Paruthi – Movie Review

What the Film Tries to Be

Paruthi aims to be a hard-hitting rural social drama that speaks about caste discrimination, emotional abandonment, and the pain of a fractured mother–son relationship. The film positions itself as a voice for the oppressed, attempting to reflect societal cruelty through a grounded village setting.

Narrative Structure – Where It Falters

The narrative begins with emotional promise but gradually loses coherence. While the core conflict is strong, the storytelling lacks clarity and progression. Scenes feel repetitive, and emotional beats are not layered effectively, causing the film to struggle in maintaining impact despite its serious subject matter.

Character Utilisation

The characters are designed with emotional depth on paper, but the screenplay does not fully explore them. Sonia Agarwal’s character has potential but is underwritten, limiting her performance. Young Dilips carries the narrative and delivers sincere moments, though his character arc feels uneven. Supporting characters function realistically but remain one-dimensional.

Visual & Technical Merits

The film scores well in technical aspects. Cinematography captures the beauty and authenticity of rural life with natural lighting and composition. The music and background score emotionally support the narrative and stand out as one of the film’s strongest elements. Editing, however, could have enhanced clarity and narrative flow.

Theme vs Execution

While the theme of caste discrimination and emotional trauma is relevant and powerful, the execution lacks cinematic sharpness. The film conveys its intent clearly but fails to translate that intent into impactful storytelling. The message is strong, but the medium falls short in delivering it effectively.

Plus Points

  • Strong social message with relevance

  • Effective background score and songs

  • Authentic rural visuals

  • Sincere performances from young actors

  • Honest directorial intent

Minus Points

  • Weak screenplay execution

  • Underdeveloped central characters

  • Emotional moments lack depth

Final Verdict

Paruthi is a film driven by social responsibility and honest intent, but it struggles to emotionally connect due to inconsistent storytelling. Despite its flaws, it deserves appreciation for addressing uncomfortable truths.
